Winter may be gracing us with its icy embrace around our bodies and deep into our bones, regardless of us kitting out in the finest knitwear Topshop can offer, but it still isn’t stopping me from digging into my makeup bag for my day one beauty favourites to combat the cold.
I am a Summer-baby through and through. I feel the only plus side of Winter is I can spend more time on my makeup every morning without a single worry of it slipping in the heat before I do as much as even leave my bedroom!
For the lucky folks in the Southern Hemisphere of the globe currently experiencing a scorcher, I shall take this opportunity to kindly direct you to my Top Five Summer Beauty Favourites after you have finished reading this post. I hope it can be of some help! For us lot battling the Baltic conditions, here are my top five Winter favourites:
I aim to keep my skincare regime as natural as possible. I prefer using fresh minimal ingredients to avoid irritating my sensitive skin. Lush Cosmetics are one of the pioneers of using fresh handmade cosmetics and I have been an enthusiastic user of their products throughout the years.
I’ve experimented with many of their Face & Body exfoliators to deal with breakouts, dry skin, and acne scarring. They have an array of products to deal with whatever issue your skin may have. Cup o’ Coffee and Mask of Magnaminty are the two I have found myself reaching for throughout the season.
The exfoliators have a strong scent of coffee and mint, respectively.
Cup o’ Coffee has a coarse grainy texture from the mixture of crushed coffee beans, making it great to use on your body once a week.
Mask of Magnaminty has a soft and gentle texture. The primrose seeds and aduki beans are delicate on the skin and ideal to use on the face twice a week. A huge advantage is the product is self-preserving, so it is not required to store in the fridge like other face masks from Lush Cosmetics.
I have been an avid user of The Body Shop since I was a teenager. I adore the ranges they release; Pina Colada and Vanilla Chai are a couple of the collections I have previously fallen in love with. The Body Shop’s Wild Argan Oil range is a new addition to the list and I am so impressed with the quality of their products!
I currently use the hand cream and body butter from the range. Both are perfect for dry skin during Winter. The moisturisers have a thick texture and a sweet discrete fragrance with delicate warm herbal notes from the wild argan.
I am definitely going to be stocking up on more products from the range and expanding my collection to try out some of the other items offered.
Winter is all about that GLOW. The dewy skin, the spotlight-ready look, the luminous highlight. It all starts with a flawless and radiant base.
I have been using MAC Cosmetics’ Mineralize Moisture SPF 15 Foundation non-stop for the past few months. It has fast become one of my holy-grail products and an enjoyable base product to use when creating my makeup looks.
The foundation provides a medium coverage with a luminous glowy finish. It has a lightweight creamy-gel texture which blends with the skin naturally. It’s perfect for both day and night, due to its long-lasting payoff. You can get away with skipping the dewy setting spray as the light reflecting satin-like texture leaves you with a refreshed and hydrated appearance.
Every Winter, I go through a phase where I am totally obsessed with dark lips. Perhaps it’s because of the versatility of the deep oxblood colour, or perhaps it’s because dark lips are a timeless classic. I am all over it and fill with glee when it’s that time of year to rotate from my Spring / Summer shades to my Autumn / Winter hues.
Big important boardroom meeting? Dark lips. Off to weekend brunch with your uni huns? Dark lips. Quick dash to Co-Op to restock your cupboard with Galaxy Ripple chocolate bars? Dark lips.
The two products I have been reaching for this season are: MAC Cosmetics Matte Lipstick in “Diva” and Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in “Heathers”.
I was on the hunt for my Winter staple and decided to swatch “Diva” when I was paying my MAC Cosmetics counter a visit. I tend to be quite hesitant when trying matte lip colours as some products can be quite drying. MAC Cosmetics’ “Diva” has a creamy formula which glides across the skin and has a boastful pigmented colour payoff. It has a creamy matte finish which doesn’t feel drying on the skin and a deep plum colour that is perfect for South Asian complexions.
I scored Anastasia Beverly Hills’ “Heathers” during the very generous Black Friday Sales. “Heathers” is one of the newer shades released; it comes with a soft sponge-tip applicator instead of the classic doe-foot found in the original range. The formula is thick with a pigmented colour payoff. It glides across the skin and sets instantly without feeling tacky nor dry on the lips. “Heathers” has a deep plum and oxblood shade; slightly darker than “Diva” but excellent for the Winter months!
Both lip products are susceptible to bleeding outside the natural lip line, so I advise using a suitable lip primer and lip liner. My favourites are the Prep + Prime Lip to refine the colour of the product and the Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in “Ms Diva” which perfectly complements both “Diva” and “Heathers”.
An artist always has a good canvas to create a good artefact. The same goes with your skin. Of course, with all these array of luxurious lip colours to choose from daily, you need to take good care of your lips. It is unimaginable how much trauma the skin on our lips endure when applying products in the morning and removing in the evening. On top of this, the harsh cold Winter temperatures show very little mercy, thus it is more likely to have dry chapped skin.
Lush Cosmetics’ Lip Scrubs are a cult classic for a reason. I use the Honey Lip Scrub every evening to nourish and soften my lips after removing my matte / liquid lipsticks.
The lip scrub has a granule texture to exfoliate and remove dead skin. It can be used once a day after removing makeup to maintain soft lips.
